Meet at the bathrooms in the middle of the park which is due south from the highway and not near the entrance. (Frostproof Highway is also Route 98.) 9 a.m to noon. Meade Outdoor Recreation Area, 1639 Frostproof Highway, Fort Meade, FL 33841. Saturday August 17th, Eagle Park Lake, 1800 Keene Road, Largo, FL 33771. All classes are about three hours long, usually over before daily showers, and include about two miles of strolling. Meade Outdoor Recreation Area is near the beginning of the Peace River with landscape ranging from high and dry oaks with chanterelles mushrooms to damp water hickories and lots of mosquitos. Meade in the middle of the state, not Mead Gardens in Winter Park.) The location in Largo, Eagle Lake Park, used to be a working farm so there is a lot of variety there. My foraging classes this week are in Largo, north of St. To read more about this dreaded import go here.įoraging classes are held rain or shine, heat or cold. The gold-spotted blossom also reminds me of the light British comedy “Keeping Up Appearances.” In that series four sisters are named after flowers: The vivacious Rose, the sweet Daisy, the seldom seen Violet, and problematic Hyacinth. I cook the bulbous bottoms like pork rinds whose flavor they resemble. When I’m cooking a soup or stew that might wilt lesser greens I use Water Hyacinth. I like to chop boiled, cooled leaves tossing them in salads for added texture and flavor. Closely related to the rooting Pickerel Weed, the Water Hyacinth is quite nutritious though always al dente even after much cooking. A century and half later they would throw him in jail. The misguided fellow who intentionally introduced it into Florida around 1876 thought it so attractive he said the state should reward him. That it is pretty and edible tends to get lost in the botanical donnybrook. The ambitious aquatic is an extremely invasive species that is hated by native plant advocates and burns up millions of tax dollars fighting it. The posed photos are good because they show various different traits that provide clues to the ID.The Water Hyacinth is blooming and no doubt many people are irritated by that. In situ photos provide some information about growth habit and general appearance of the mushrooms in a natural setting. But one similar northeastern NA species that comes to mind is A. Subgenus Lepidella is subdivided into sections Lepidella, Amidella, Phalloideae, and Validae. Subgenus Amanita is subdivided into sections Amanita, Caesareae, and Vaginatae. The many different species are divided between subgenera "Amanita" and "Lepidella". Amanita is a very large genus -containing some of the most poisonous mushrooms known. Her's another link, this one also is for the ASW, except in this case, specifically for section Amanita. Here's a link to the Amanita Studies Website. I am quite certain these Florida Amanitas represent a species that I haven't seen up here in PA. The combination of marginal striations and annulus strongly suggests "section Amanita" from subgenus Amanita. Note the marginal striations seen on the cap surface. These mushrooms which each show an annulus on the stem (remains of partial veil) belong to some species of Amanita. paradoxus, as this species is listed as occurring in FL with pine and/or live oak. Pale yellowish/orangish latex indicates L. Dark purplish-red latex indicates the mushrooms are L. In the case of the mushrooms seen here, the color of the latex is the key to the species ID. (Old/dry ones may show virtually none.) In order to see the latex, slice the mushroom and gently press a piece of white paper against the cut flesh. The "milkies" with colorful latex often produce very little latex. The bluish-gray ones represent a species of Lactarius -similar to but not the exact same species as L. Just have some water handy in case it's an acrid one.) There's probably a shorter list of red Russula species one would expect to find in FL as compared with those occurring across North America. (It's okay to taste and spit a tiny amount of Russula. Knowing whether the taste of the flesh is mild, somewhat bitter, or very acrid would narrow things down. Naming the species is another matter lots of possibilities. The red one is, as you say Rckstr, a mushroom representing some species of Russula.
